AEGEE Beograd officially became part of AEGEE Europe network on 12th November 1995. for the past 12 years it has build the image a serious and responsible students organization. It has organized more then 45 international students’ events and with that statistics is ranked in the first 10 top active locals in the whole AEGEE Europe network. Up so far we have hosted more then 2 500 international students. During its long work and existence, AEGEE Beograd has had the support of the Belgrade University, city of Belgrade and Ministry of Education in the Serbian government.
AEGEE Europe (Association des Etats Généraux des Etudiants de l’Europe) is a student organisation that promotes co-operation, communication and integration amongst young people in Europe. Through active and critical confrontation with Europe, AEGEE Europe wants to help develop an open and tolerant society. It strives for European integration and better understanding between the different peoples from Europe. As a non-governmental, politically independent and non-profit organisation AEGEE Europe is open to students from all faculties and disciplines.
AEGEE Europe, which was founded in 1985 in Paris, puts the idea of a unified Europe into practice. A widely spread student network of approx. 15.000 members in 240 local branches provides the ideal platform where young people can work together, free from any national way of thinking. AEGEE Europe brings together youth workers and young volunteers from 40 European countries with activities such as conferences, seminars, exchanges, training courses, Summer Universities, case study trips and Working Group/ project meetings. By encouraging travel and mobility, stimulating discussion and organising common projects AEGEE Europe attempts to overcome national, cultural and ethnic divisions and to create a vision of young people’s Europe.
AEGEE Europe ’s main fields of actions are Peace & Stability, Active Citizenship, Cultural Exchange and Higher Education.
Since 1988 the Summer University is one of the most representative activities and the most successful AEGEE Europe project. The courses organised by more than 100 of our local branches symbolise perfectly the cultural exchange in AEGEE Europe. Every year more than 5000 students apply to learn about the language and culture of the hosting country and of the other participants for two whole weeks. Due to the various topics (such as politics, languages, history, art, sports, travelling, etc.), the Summer Universities offer a broad diversity to an equally diverse target group. At the same time, they make young people visit places that are off the usual touristic map, where they are not welcome as tourists but as friends.
In contrary to other organisations, AEGEE Europe does not consider any national organisation level, and relies solely on the local branches and a European level that consists of project teams, Working Groups, commissions and the European Board of Directors.
During its 21 years of existance, AEGEE Europe has been working on a regular basis with the European Commission on implementing projects and is consulted on themes related to the students, and particularly to the SOCRATES program. AEGEE Europe is also recognised and has Consultative Status towards UNESCO and has Participatory Status towards the Council of Europe, and special consultative status in the United Nations (Economic and Social Committee). It is furthermore member of the European Youth Forum, IFISO and EUCIS/LLL (Lifelong Learning Platform).
The organisation has also a number of illustrious personalities amongst its general partners: e.g. Mikhael Gorbatchev, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize; Vaclav Havel, former President of the Czech Republic; Eric Froment, President of the European University Association; Bronislaw Geremek, former Chairman of OSCE and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland.
The Summer University Project is one of the longest running projects of AEGEE Europe. Young people organise a non-fomal learning experience in their local community for their peers from other European countries to learn about the culture, language and pecularities of their heritage and to motivate them to become active European citizens.
AEGEE Europe sees the need to develop its methodology, open up to other organisations and organisational concepts especially to the latest developments in the youth training field. Therefore the application of non-formal education methods should give a boost to the project that yearly touches the life of about 5000 young people.
