Summer University
A Summer University is usually a two-week event organized by an AEGEE local where between 20 and 50 young people come together from all over Europe. Summer Universities are organized by young people for young people. The activities carried out during a Summer University range from academic activities as classes to learn a foreign language, different courses on technical themes to multicultural activities: get familiar with Finnish culture, Spanish history, Greek mythology; learn how to sail, attend a photography course in Turkey or do hike in Polish woods, etc. Each year around 90 Summer Universities take place all over Europe, with around 5.000 people from more than 40 European countries applying; from Portugal to Moldova, and from Finland to Malta. The Summer Universities are organized this year for the 20th time. It is the biggest volunteer-based mobility project in Europe.
The Summer University Project aims at opening a new perspective to the participants over the multicultural dimension of the European continent. It also promotes understanding among European students, removing national borders and creating a European feeling.
The programme’s key to success is the effort to involve as many people as possible. It includes workshops in different areas auch as history, literature, culture, art, cinema etc. It also offers the opportunity to experience traditional food, enjoy a European Night party and a compulsory AEGEE lesson :), learn about other cultures and even discover yourself. Active debates, music and youth spirit are traditionally part of the programme of a Summer University.
Summer University Coordination Team
Summer University is centrally coordinated by the Summer University Coordination Team, short SUCT, a team of members located all over Europe, plus one appointed from the CD.
SUCT is a group of experienced AEGEE members with significant knowledge on organizing successful international events. Each year they find a way how to improve the Summer Universities in a way to make all the participating parties happy – people who go to Summer Universities and people who organize them. This year, AEGEE Europe is celebrating 20th anniversary of Summer University project. SUCT took this fact into consideration when planning the overall Summer University activities for this summer. Thanks to them, Summer Universities this year will be better then ever before. By setting standards in the program requirements, content management, support to locals and the new and improved application system, Summer Universities this year will be a totally new experience, even for people familiar with AEGEE. Event in Beograd is an ideal opportunity to meet the whole SUCT team and discuss with them all the work that has been done so far as well as future actions that are to be taken. Maybe You will be the next SUCT member and improve the Summer universities in future, who knows?
Among its tasks: approving Summer Universities proposed by AEGEE locals, publishing PR material and a booklet with all data, maintaining databases and the website with all the information, participating in any SU as observer for up to two days, excluding locals from the project in case rules are not respected.
